The Arizona Bowl was officially announced on October 1, 2015 as the Nova Home Loans Arizona Bowl. It was also announced that the Sun Belt Conference would provide a secondary tie-in in case either conference did not have a bowl-eligible team to play the Arizona Bowl. Since the fall semester ended on December 12, it cost NMSU $44,451 for student athlete per diem and housing between the end of the semester and the bowl game, as well as another $28,732 for one meal per day for the football team. Georgia State also entered the game with a 7–5 record (4–4 in conference), also having lost three of four games to end their regular season. The Panthers also lost to the only ranked FBS team they faced, Appalachian State. In 2015, NOVA Home Loans brought college football bowl games back to Tucson with the NOVA Home Loans Arizona Bowl. From 2015 to 2019, 100% of the games' proceeds were donated to charities. Volunteers will assist in various roles to ensure players and college football fans experience Tucson at its best. There are numerous positions available including field and stadium operations support, pre-game events set up and support, traffic control and parking, and more.
Both teams play in the Mountain West Conference, setting up an ultra-rare bowl meeting between league foes. The last nonchampionship bowl game to feature two teams from the same conference was the Orange Bowl … in 1979. On April 18, 2017, it was announced that CBS Sports Network had acquired rights to the Arizona Bowl under a "multi-year" deal; Campus Insiders is no longer involved in the broadcast. The 2021 game was canceled after the Boise State Broncos withdrew due to COVID-19 issues within the program. Their scheduled opponent, the Central Michigan Chippewas, were named as a replacement team for the Sun Bowl.
